For most people, the first day of September is that perpetual Monday that smells like the end of summer vacation, inescapable routines, and merciless alarm clocks. However, for an entire generation, this date carries the unmistakable scent of secret platforms, heavy trunks, and golden train tickets. It’s “Back to Hogwarts Day,” the international day dedicated to Harry Potter, pop culture’s most famous boy wizard, and this year the calendar tells us it won’t be just any fall: it marks exactly 25 years since the first sparks of magic lit up the big screen.
It was 2001 when the first film in this immense saga enchanted movie theaters around the world. To commemorate this quarter-century milestone, Barcelona and its metropolitan area have decided not to be left behind. Starting this month, the area is rolling out a schedule of activities that will transform various urban spots into a magical realm, offering everything from screenings of never-before-seen footage to unorthodox sports competitions and symphonic concerts.
Twelve minutes of never-before-seen magic in theaters
Nostalgia strikes first on the big screen. From August 27 to September 3, “The Sorcerer’s Stone” returns to theaters, but it does so with an ace up its sleeve: twelve minutes of bonus footage that never made it to theaters during its original release. This extended version will be shown at major theaters in Barcelona and its metropolitan area, including Yelmo and Cinesa theaters, as well as Mooby locations in Aribau, Balmes, and Gran Sarrià.
If there’s one place that knows how to throw a great movie-lover’s gathering, it’s the Filmax Gran Via complex , located in the Gran Via 2 shopping center (Avenida de la Granvia de l’Hospitalet, 75). These theaters, a true local mecca for pop culture lovers, have prepared an immersive “Back to Hogwarts Day.” The film will not only be screened in traditional formats but also in 4DX, a technology that lets you feel the brooms’ movements, the cold, the heat, and even the film’s weather phenomena right from your seat. In addition, the theaters will host raffles, giveaways, and themed activities.
The shopping center itself is joining the festivities with a “photocall” that recreates the legendary Platform 9¾ and the Hogwarts Express. Those whostop by on Friday afternoons or Saturdays will find displays of the iconic magical sport, “Quidditch,” and a LEGO building area inspired by this fantastical universe. The grand finale will take place on September 5 with a massive costume contest.
High-altitude sports and cinematic escapism
The broomstick craze is also spilling over into real life thanks to “Quidditch,” the real-world adaptation of that fictional sport, similar to a frenetic version of rugby. The Catalan Quidditch Association (AQC) will organize open-door training sessions for anyone curious to try their hand at the sport before the European Quidditch Games, which will take place in Salou on October 3 and 4.
For those who prefer to put their minds to the task, the master plan is hidden at Last Minute Cornellà (Calle Catalans, 14, Cornellà de Llobregat). There you’ll find “The Legacy of the Phoenix,” an “escape room” whose setting has reached such a level of realism that even original actors from the movies have visited it to applaud its sets.
An autumn brimming with spells
Far from fading away, the anniversary will continue to come alive as the months go by. On the nights of October 23 and 24, the sky above the Fòrum will light up with the Harry Potter DroneArt Show, a technological spectacle that will create magical effects high above.
The following week, coinciding with All Saints’ Day weekend (October 31–November 1), the city will host the BCN Witch Fest, a market dedicated to witchcraft that this year will be an unmissable gathering spot for fans of the saga. Finally, the grand finale will take place on November 21 and 22 at the Teatre Apolo (Avenida del Paral·lel, 59). The Barcelona venue will host the Hogwarts Magic Symphony, a concert where a live orchestra will perform the now-legendary soundtrack that has accompanied us for the past quarter-century.
