That June is being a heat torture and a loud announcement of climate change is no secret. But now that the month is coming to an end, the data confirms it: this June has been the worst June in the history of the city.
This is evidenced by data from the Observatori Fabra, the official temperature gauge in the city, which confirms that Barcelona had not experienced a June with an average temperature like this since data began to be taken in 1914.
The worst June in history
As we said, the average temperature this June has been the highest in 112 years of records, and is, provisionally, at 26ºC. The previous record was set in June 2003, and is 4.7 degrees above the historical climate average. In fact, never before has a month of June recorded such high temperatures for so many consecutive days.
In addition, other records have been broken: there have been more days with maximum temperatures above 35 ºC than ever before in a month of June.
Finally, and in the absence of official confirmation, the automatic station of the Observatori Fabra marked this June 30 the 37.9 ºC, which would be the highest temperature ever recorded in Barcelona in a month of June. The previous record was 37.7 ºC, reached in June 2019.
To the heat wave must be added a worrying drought, which clearly did not end with the March rains and which with this heat has returned with a vengeance. In the whole month of June, it has not rained a single day appreciably in Barcelona, and the Observatori Fabra has recorded 0 liters per square meter.
