L’Ajuntament de Barcelona will install between this year and 2027 about 200 shade systems to protect the city from high temperatures for the coming summer.
Mayor Jaume Collboni has announced a new phase of the Shade Program, an initiative under the Climate Plan that seeks to improve thermal comfort during the summer months.
In 2025, new shade systems will be installed in 66 children’s playgrounds, 15 school playgrounds and three large areas of the city: Plaça del Mar, Rambla del Carmel and the Sant Andreu Comtal station slab. To these spaces will be added 13 more squares by 2027.
In the children’s areas, once the awnings and trees have been installed, the city is expected to have more than 300 shaded playgrounds by 2027.
Currently, 62% of Barcelona’s public space has shaded areas. However, of the remaining 39%, approximately half require urgent interventions due to the intensive use of the spaces or the high solar radiation they receive, according to data from the city council.
The priority measure will be to plant trees whenever possible, as this is the healthiest and most sustainable option. In spaces where trees cannot be planted, fixed structures will be installed with solar panels -which provide shade and generate clean energy-, temporary structures such as awnings for the hottest months, or shading elements designed specifically for unique spaces, which will be defined by public tender.
To evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions, the temperature in some spaces will be monitored before and after the installation of the temporary shading elements.
With a budget of 13 million euros, the Shade Program complements other actions of the Climate Plan, such as climatic shelters or the air conditioning of schools.
