The La Mercè festivities ended less than three days ago, but we’re already eager to celebrate them again, and although we still have quite a while to wait, at least we have a little preview of what’s in store. Mexico City will be the guest city at La Mercè 2027, taking over from Shanghai.
This designation aims to strengthen ties and recognize the Mexican community living in Barcelona and Catalonia. Furthermore, both cities share a rich cultural and artistic heritage—aspects that always provide ideas and opportunities to enhance the festival’s events.
The agreement was reached in New York during the Urban20 international summit, where Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni and Clara Brugada, head of government of Mexico City, met. The Aztec city received the proposal with great enthusiasm and joy.
Furthermore, the Mexican capital also has a strong connection to the Virgin of La Mercè: she lends her name to one of the city’s most iconic neighborhoods and markets, and on September 24, they celebrate her feast day with dancing, food, and music.
