When the snow melts, the Pyrenees don’t fall silent; they simply change their appearance. The white blanket gives way to the intense green of the valleys, and the silence of the peaks is now broken by the whoosh of those seeking to touch the sky in a different way. This Friday, the Boí Taüll mountain resort inaugurated the longest double zip line in all of Catalonia, a facility named the T-1000 that invites visitors to soar over the mountain range at an altitude of more than 2,000 meters.
Spearheaded by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) in collaboration with the authorities of the Vall de Boí, this new attraction aims to keep tourism and the local economy thriving during the summer months. With its launch, visitors and families now have a compelling reason to escape the high temperatures and set off to enjoy a dizzying descent down the mountain.
Flying at an altitude of more than two thousand meters
The total length of the course is 1,220 meters, as the new attraction adds a brand-new 1,020-meter section to the initial 200-meter stretch that opened last summer. The ride begins at the base of the resort itself, at an altitude of 2,037 meters, and ends at 1,935 meters after descending 102 meters.
To ensure a complete experience and so that no one has to worry about the walk back, a small shuttle with a capacity for nine people picks up the adventurers at the arrival area and comfortably returns them to the starting point.
Alone or with friends (and soon, Superman-style)
The T-1000 features two parallel cables, allowing riders to enjoy the experience either individually or in tandem. In this initial phase, the ride is taken in a seated position, much like paragliding. However, plans are already in place to soon introduce the spectacular horizontal mode, popularly known as the “Superman flight.”
The rules for riding are clear and simple: the weight limit ranges from 50 to 120 kilos. If you choose the tandem option to ride with younger children, kids can ride starting at age 6 (with a minimum weight of 20 kilos), as long as they are accompanied by an adult and the combined weight of both does not exceed 130 kilos.
The mountains don’t close for vacation
This inauguration is not an isolated event, but rather part of a plan to ensure the area generates opportunities year-round. During the opening ceremony, FGC President Carles Ruiz Novella summed up this philosophy very well: “When the snow melts, the mountains don’t close.” The mayor of Vall de Boí, Sònia Bruguera, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the key role the new zipline will play in giving the local economy an extra boost during the summer season.
In addition to gliding through the sky suspended from a cable, visitors to Boí Taüll this summer will find other ways to enjoy nature. Among them is the opening of the Vaques chairlift, ideal for accessing various viewpoints and high-mountain trails. And when the sun goes down, the area takes advantage of its excellent night sky and its proximity to the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park to organize stargazing sessions under the stars.
