The urban scars of northern Barcelona, made of asphalt and distances, are one step closer to healing thanks to the perseverance of its people. Residents and organizations united under the Trinitat per la mateixa via platform celebrated a historic milestone this Sunday: the future connection of Metro Lines 1 and 3 between Trinitat Vella and Trinitat Nova, a long-awaited infrastructure project in the districts of Sant Andreu and Nou Barris.
The final push came last May following the Comuns’ agreement to include the extension’s funding in the Catalan budget, unblocking a project that had been forgotten by the authorities for over two decades. According to the Infrastructure Master Plan, construction should be completed by 2030, a timeline that the local community will closely monitor to ensure that commitments are met without delay.
Two decades of underground persistence
Just two years ago, more than 1,500 people joined hands in a human chain to demand that the metro cross the invisible border between the two Trinitats. Their persistence has paid off after what seemed like an endless wait.
The transportation improvement will not only benefit internal mobility in Barcelona. The link will facilitate daily commutes for users throughout the metropolitan area, especially in municipalities like Badalona and Santa Coloma, where residents have also been awaiting this connection for some time.
The Sarajevo Bridge, the next green battle
With the metro commitment secured, the neighborhood now has its sights set on its next major goal to improve local quality of life: the widening of the Sarajevo Bridge deck. Residents aim to gain approximately 1,200 meters to be used for green spaces and new community facilities.
This new initiative combines health, the environment, and the historical memory of the neighborhoods. The platform’s ultimate goal is to improve the environment, reduce pollution, and enhance the area’s quality of life. In short, it is a struggle to reclaim a shared space that will once again actively connect both neighborhoods.
