A new DANA (Isolated High Level Depression) is approaching Catalonia this week, generating concern among meteorological authorities and the population due to the serious precedents of the last days.
The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) issued a special warning this weekend alerting about the arrival of this meteorological phenomenon from Wednesday, November 13, so now municipal and civil protection authorities are on alert for the possible effects of this new storm in Catalonia.
When will the rains return to Catalonia and Barcelona?
From Tuesday rains will arrive that may be accompanied locally by storms and hail, as reported by Meteocat.
It is expected that the worst of the DANA reaches Catalonia from Wednesday to affect the territory throughout the week, especially in the areas of the Catalan coast and pre-coastal.
On Wednesday there will be rains that will remit later to leave a drop in temperatures and cold on Thursday and Friday.
It is expected that by Saturday the storm will have crossed the peninsula and leave its last light streaks in Andalusia.
Rainfall is expected to reach 80 to 100 mm, with the possibility of locally reaching up to 200 mm, throughout the week. To put this in context, on the worst day of the DANA in Valencia some 700 mm per m2 fell. Therefore, the authorities call to be alert for sudden showers, but do not expect an episode of the severity of the one experienced in Valencia a few days ago.
Which territories are the most affected?
The areas that could be most affected are the north of the Valencian Country, the Catalan coast and Barcelona and its surroundings. The DANA will also pass through the Balearic Islands.
The Meteocat has activated a yellow alert (level 1 of 6) for five regions of the central Catalan coast, including Barcelona, from 13:00 on Tuesday until 01:00 on Wednesday. In this period, sudden rainfall of about 20 mm in 30 minutes is expected, which could be accompanied by local storms.
At the moment, the situation is uncertain and will become more concrete in the coming days, so citizens are advised to stay informed through the official channels of Meteocat and Civil Protection to receive the latest updates and recommendations.
Safety recommendations
As in all storm episodes, authorities urge the population to stay informed and follow Civil Protection recommendations. Some precautionary measures include:
1. Avoid approaching rivers, streams, torrents and ravines due to the possible sudden increase in their flow. Do not park cars in these areas and avoid crossing them in case of sudden floods.
2. In case of being in the mountains during rainfall, go to high points away from the margins of possible bodies of water.
3. Do not go down to floodable areas such as basements or garages if the rains are very intense.
4. Protect pets and valuables from possible flooding.
It is important to remember that, although this is a meteorological phenomenon similar to the one that caused severe damage in Valencia recently, each DANA is unique and its effects may vary. The authorities stress the importance of being attentive to official warnings and following the indications of the emergency services.
