Barcelona will remodel the square in front of the steps of the Sagrada Família to make it larger and more accessible to pedestrians.
The enlargement of the square in front of the Nativity Façade will provide more than 6,200 m² of space for visitors on the stretch of Carrer de la Marina, between Mallorca and Provença, as well as the Plaça de Gaudí. The aim is to create a large versatile space that will serve as an extension of the park, an area for popular gatherings and a prelude to the Temple.
This action is part of the Action Plan for the Sagrada Familia’s Space of Great Affluence (EGA). With this unification of the space, the city council has communicated that it wants to improve the coexistence in the area, displacing the private vehicle of the environment to give it to neighbors, visitors and improve the trade of proximity.
The works, which will begin next Tuesday, September 16, will have a planned duration of 8 months, with completion estimated for the end of May 2026. Just over 2 million euros have been budgeted for this specific action. The works will be organized in three phases to minimize the inconvenience to neighbors and visitors, always guaranteeing the passage.

The project, which will begin in autumn, is inspired by the circular layout proposed in 1977 by Rubió and Tudurí for the current Gaudí square. This design radially connects the stairs of the basilica with the access roads to the square and moves the Carrer de la Marina road away from the façade. The superimposition of this circular system with the radial geometry of the accesses will become the basis of the new square, which will have a large perimeter bench to delimit the space.

The Sagrada Família Great Influence Space Plan (2024-2027) is a comprehensive action that includes about 40 measures and a total investment of 15.5 million euros, of which this pedestrianization is part, being the first of the major interventions planned.
