Barcelona will remodel the square in front of the steps of the Sagrada Família to make it larger and more accessible to pedestrians. The enlargement of the square in front of the Nativity Façade will be completed in 2026 and will provide more than 6,200m2 of space for visitors in the section of Carrer de la Marina, between Mallorca and Provença, as well as Gaudí Square.
This action is part of the Sagrada Família’s Action Plan for the Area of Great Influence (EGA). With this unification of the space, the city council has communicated that it wants to improve the coexistence in the area, displacing the private vehicle of the environment to give it to neighbors, visitors and improve the proximity trade.
The project, which will begin in autumn, is inspired by the circular layout proposed in 1977 by Rubió and Tudurí, with a design that radially connects the stairs of the basilica with the access roads to the square.
The Sagrada Família Major Influence Area Plan (2024-2027) is a comprehensive action that includes nearly 40 measures and an investment of 15.5 million euros, of which this pedestrianization is part.
