“Et in arcadia ego” this Latin phrase reminds us, since time immemorial, the presence of death in all aspects of life. It means, “even in Arcadia (an idyllic place) I am still here and I (death) am in charge”. In the face of this, we have different options: fear it, resign ourselves to it, embrace it or make art out of it.
This last option has fascinated civilizations and societies throughout history and, thanks to this, we find cemeteries that are true open-air museums. One of them, without a doubt, is the Cementiri del Poblenou, where beautiful sculptures of neoclassical, modernist and eclectic style are concentrated.
Walking around there, more than being a Halloween plan, is a real cultural excursion. For this reason, and to show the special architecture of the cemetery, Cementiris de Barcelona has organized a night route through the Cementiri del Poblenou on October 17.
The visit consists of a look back to the Barcelona of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through the most important pantheons of the cemetery and the illustrious people who are buried there. You will learn about their history and how they contributed to Barcelona in their time. In addition, to make the visit more special, the tour will be illuminated with candles.
A night route to the sound of Anselm Clavé’s music.
The itinerary will last 75 minutes, a little over an hour, and will take place on October 17. As it gets dark early, the visits will begin at 19h, and will be every half hour until 22:30h, when the night has already fallen over Barcelona and we can enjoy the architectural spectacle illuminated under the light of the candles that will be placed, as in previous editions, along the cemetery.
But it will not only be a spectacle for the eyes, but taking advantage of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Catalan musician Anselm Clavé, buried in the cemetery, music will also be one of the main protagonists of this day.
Tickets cost 12 € and you can book them at this link.
