Just look up at the sky to see that March has started with overcast and rain in Barcelona. The Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat) has activated the alert for heavy rains in Barcelonès and Vallès Occidental.
Initially the alert was reserved for Terres de l’Ebre, but a change in the direction of the storm has made it reach the coast of Barcelona, and has raised the warning level in the metropolitan area of Barcelona unexpectedly.
Orange alert in Barcelona
This has caused the alert in Barcelona to be raised to orange level (yellow in Vallés Occidental). According to Meteocat, the city is facing a localized episode of intense and localized rains and storms, in the coming hours could register rainfall of more than 20 liters per square meter in just half an hour.
For its part, the Terres de l’Ebre are still under warning for accumulation of rainfall, with a risk of over 100 liters per square meter in 24 hours, especially in the Montsià, Baix Ebre and Terra Alta. The warning threshold is especially likely in the area of the massís del Port, where rainfall could be more persistent.
As usual with these alarms, it is recommended to exercise extreme caution when traveling and avoid flooding areas. Local authorities are constantly monitoring the evolution of the storm.
