Some news is greeted with the same enthusiasm as a bucket of popcorn before the lights go down, and the reopening of Phenomena is, without a doubt, one of them. After six months of renovations and that mysterious “The show will go on” message that left us on the edge of our seats last September, what many consider the best movie theater on the continent now has a return date. On April 2, the legendary screen on Sant Antoni Maria Claret Street will light up again, and it won’t be just any old way: the theater has undergone a complete “makeover” that promises to take the movie-going experience to a whole new level.
The renovation wasn’t just about aesthetics. As confirmed by the theater itself and reported by local media, Phenomena— Europe’s best cinema in 2025—is debuting new sound systems, state-of-the-art projectors, and upgraded screens. But perhaps what our backs will appreciate most are the new ergonomic seats, designed so that movie marathons don’t take a toll. In addition, the redesign includes a new lounge, renovated entrances, and updated restrooms, blending that nostalgic vibe we love so much with 21st-century comfort.
Unforgettable classics and a space odyssey with Ryan Gosling
To celebrate this new chapter, the first week’s lineup is a true declaration of love for the seventh art. The Top Phenomena series will bring back ten of the titles that have stirred the most passion in the theater, allowing us to tremble once more with *Jaws* or *The Shining*, be blown away again by *2001: A Space Odyssey*, or lose ourselves in the aesthetics of *Akira*. Nor will the “must-sees” be missing from The Unforgettables series, where gems like ‘Psycho’ or ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ will shine with the new technical team.
But the highlight for fans of contemporary science fiction will come in the form of ‘ProjectHail Mary‘. The highly anticipated adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel, starring Ryan Gosling, will be screened in its original language with subtitles in 4K resolution and Dolby Atmos® sound. It’s the perfect opportunity to see if Gosling manages to save us all on a screen that now, more than ever, feels like a window to space.
If you’re the type who prefers a movie with a fresh cup of coffee, morning screenings are also making a strong comeback. Under the title Good Morning, Godfather, Sunday mornings will be reserved for the first two installments of Coppola’s saga. And if pure, unadulterated adventure is your thing, the Indy Is Back! series will bring back the original Indiana Jones trilogy to remind us why Harrison Ford will always be our favorite archaeologist.
The anticipation is so high that the theater has already organized VIP screenings for March 28 and 29, whose tickets sold out almost instantly. Barcelona thus reclaims one of its great cultural temples, just in time to remind us that, no matter how far streaming platforms advance, nothing beats the magic of a dark theater, a sound that makes your chest vibrate, and a story shared with strangers. See you in row 7.
