Summer in Barcelona has its own rituals: the scorching asphalt, the long afternoons, and, of course, the classic underground construction projects that disrupt our daily routines. Starting this Friday and continuing through August 28, Metro Line 1 will be partially suspended, leaving the direct connection between the Florida and Plaça de Sants stations out of service due to new improvement work.
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) will use this time to carry out a project with a budget of 11.5 million euros, joining other routine renovations on the network during the summer months. The measure will disrupt the daily commutes of thousands of residents: specifically, some 43,000 passengers on weekdays in July and nearly 36,000 on each day in August, who will have to find new ways to reach their destinations.
The five affected stations
During this month and a half, trains will no longer stop at five specific stations on the red line: Florida, Torrassa, Santa Eulàlia, Mercat Nou, and Plaça de Sants.
However, stations that serve as connections to other routes in the network will maintain some of their service. This is the case at Plaça de Sants, where the platforms for Line L5 will continue to operate as usual, serving as the main underground alternative for affected passengers.
To prevent the closure from disrupting traffic in the affected neighborhoods, an alternative bus service has been set up that will follow the same route above ground that the metro normally takes underground.
In addition, to ensure no one gets lost on the first day of changes, a team of information officers will be stationed on the streets to guide those who are unsure of their way. This information campaign, which began rolling out late last week, will step up its presence starting today at more than fifteen strategic locations throughout the affected network.
