A square where it is most needed. Anyone who knows the Eixample knows that on its left side, between Passeig de Gràcia and Sants, there are hardly any squares or open or green spaces to make life outside walking between cars. And although the superilla of Consell de Cent has changed this radically, this kind of spaces are still missing, and hence the birth of this new square that will be born soon in the section of Avinguda de Roma, between the intersections of Viladomat and Calàbria, which will mark a before and after in the Eixample.
The area will begin to be renovated next year, and its highlight will be a new 8,800 m² square in front of the Estel building, the future headquarters of the new global innovation hub of the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. The project, with a budget of some 4.5 million euros, will extend the works until the spring of 2027. The aim: to further pacify the Avenida de Roma and create a new green and pedestrian space right in front of the emblematic Estel building, the former Telefónica headquarters, which is currently under construction.
In addition to the large square, a pacified promenade will be built that will reach València street and will include landscaped areas and a 600 m² pipicán.
On the north side of the building, a single-platform service lane will be provided to facilitate access to the buildings in the area, while maintaining pedestrian priority.
Avinugda Roma: from mini-road to walking space
This will be the third major refurbishment of Avinguda de Roma, an axis that began to be transformed more than twenty years ago. The first section, between Aragó and Comte d’Urgell, was pacified in 2004. In 2010 it was followed by the section between Comte d’Urgell and Viladomat. With this new impulse, the pacification will now approach the Plaça dels Països Catalans and Sants station, whose extension and renovation works have been underway for weeks.
