The Ciutat Vella district will unveil renovated infrastructure thanks to a €14.28 million cash injection. The flagship project will be the transformation of the current Drassanes municipal sports center into a modern sports center with full services for federated competition.
This project on Avenida de Drassanes will have a budget of over €11.7 million. The work will provide the neighborhood with an enclosed venue of more than 2,000 square meters with a capacity for 250 spectators. Local clubs will be able to play official futsal, basketball, handball, and volleyball matches there starting in 2028, the year construction will begin.
New community spaces on Carrer Sant Martí
The package of improvements will also reach Carrer de Sant Martí. The council will create a new 900-square-meter public square and a 658-square-meter indoor sports facility located on the ground floor of a new affordable rental housing building.
Local authorities expect construction to begin in early 2027. With these measures, the municipal government seeks to make it easier for residents to continue living in the neighborhood by providing quality public services that improve their daily lives.
Early childhood education and outdoor sports
The plan also sets aside funds for education and grassroots sports. A temporary court will be built on Carrer de Sant Bertomeu this summer with an investment of €315,000. This space will serve as a recreation area while the construction of the neighborhood’s future nursery school, planned for the same site, is being processed .
In addition, the Sant Pau Gardens will host a pilot project with the installation of a high-tech basketball hoop. This new facility, promoted by the Barcelona Sports Institute, will be operational in early 2027 and will modernize non-regulated sports in the heart of the Raval neighborhood.
All these actions are part of the first Ciutat Vella Sports Plan 2026-2028. The main objective of this strategy will be to use physical activity as a tool for social cohesion, especially among young people in the southern part of the district.
