Barcelona City Council will launch one of the largest urban reforms of the coming decades in the area surrounding Sagrera station. Mayor Jaume Collboni explained that the local administration will allocate €260 million over the next seven years to create a new urban center.
The municipal intention is for the city to gain space before the railway infrastructure itself is completed. According to current plans , the transformation will allow some 30,000 people to settle in this area of the Catalan capital.
A record-breaking green lung
The centerpiece of this renovation will be a 36-hectare linear park. This green space will cover 4 kilometers, which is twice the size of the current Ciutadella Park. The infrastructure will connect the coastline with the Besòs River and improve air quality in the eastern part of the city.
The city council will launch a participatory process with residents this fall to finalize the design. The government team’s goal is for workers to plant the first trees by the end of 2027. Spaces such as the Sant Andreu Comtal gardens are already visible, but the rest will be developed progressively.
Social housing and public services
The plan envisages the construction of 11,300 new homes, almost half of which will be subsidized. By sector, the Prim area will accommodate 3,500 apartments, while 2,300 will be built in the immediate vicinity of the station. Other notable areas will be Casernes de Sant Andreu and La Maquinista.
To cater for the new population, the City Council will reserve 200,000 square meters for public facilities. The list includes sports, health, and cultural centers. In fact, the Sagrera municipal sports center will open this summer, and the Casernes nursery school will open next school year.
Economic hub and employment
The arrival of high-speed rail in La Sagrera will turn the area into an engine of wealth. The project is expected to create 10,000 new jobs thanks to the 480,000 square meters set aside for offices, hotels, and shops. This activity will be concentrated in strategic locations such as the Triangle Ferroviari and the former Mercedes factory.
With this project , the city will have a second major rail gateway to complement the Sants station. This connectivity will make it easier for companies and talent to settle in the area, creating direct links with other technology districts such as 22@.
