The Sant Pau Modernist Complex in Barcelona is an architectural, historical, and artistic ensemble designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built between 1902 and 1930, it is the largest Modernist complex in the world and one of the jewels of European Art Nouveau.
For a century, it served as the home of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, and today it opens its doors to visitors… or even candlelight concerts at the Sant Pau Modernist Complex this summer.
Origins, history, and architecture of the former hospital
The project began as an innovative hospital that integrated Modernist architecture, advanced technology, and a garden-city design, with pavilions surrounded by gardens and natural light intended to enhance patients’ well-being. Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner with 27 pavilions inspired by Europe’s most modern hospitals, it housed the former Hospital de la Santa Creu from 1926 until 2009. After the hospital moved, the complex was restored and today hosts international institutions such as the WHO.

Among the summer’s highlights are the Candlelight concerts in Barcelona, where classical music blends with candlelight to create a truly magical experience. How to get there by public transportation
This gem of Modernist architecture in Barcelona is located in the Baix-Guinardó neighborhood, with the main entrance at 167 Sant Antoni Maria Claret Street. To get there, you can use public transportation, with the Sant Pau – Dos de Maig (L5) and Sagrada Familia (L2 or L4) metro stops, or buses H8, 19, 47, 117, and 192.

Hours and last admission
Sant Pau is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from April through October and from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from November through March. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
Prices and discounted tickets
Tickets for a self-guided tour of Sant Pau Barcelona cost €18 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and €17 after 2:00 p.m., with the option to supplement the visit with an audio guide for about €3–4 in various languages. Guided tours start at around €20–21 for adults.
As for reduced rates, discounts are available for Barcelona residents, people over 65, and holders of large-family or single-parent family cards, as well as other specific groups. Free admission is also available for accompanied children under 12, unemployed individuals, and certain professional or cultural groups.
