Several Catalan municipalities have adopted this summer the ban on smoking on their beaches, reaching a total of 20 municipalities totaling approximately 80 beaches and coves with this active regulation. The measure aims to protect public health, improve the cleanliness of the coastline and reduce the environmental impact of cigarette butts.
The initiative is part of a strategy of the Diputació de Barcelona to convert all coastal municipalities into “smoke-free beaches” by 2026. This year, 13 of Barcelona’s 25 coastal municipalities are already participating; Mataró will join in 2026 with a formal ban on all its beaches. In Barcelona, for example, where smoking has been banned along the entire coastline since July 2022, the fine amounts to €30.
In total, it is estimated that in Catalonia there will be more than 80 smoke-free beaches active in 2025, adding the entire Autonomous Community, although full coverage is still under development.
