The Catalan Meteorological Service is forecasting another rise in temperatures and is maintaining a yellow or orange alert throughout the region.
Catalonia is facing its third heat wave so far this summer. After recording the highest temperatures in the last century last week and “enjoying” a brief respite over the weekend, the weather in Catalonia is heating up again , and we’ll experience another spell of extreme temperatures, at least through next Thursday, July 16.
The Catalan Meteorological Service (Meteocat) has warned of the arrival of a mass of warm air from North Africa which, accompanied by a cloud of Saharan dust, will cause temperatures to rise gradually until they reach their peak on Wednesday, July 15.
Temperatures in the city of Barcelona are expected to reach 26 degrees Celsius overnight on Wednesday and 33 degrees during the day, although the heat index could be much higher due to humidity, which will be above 60%.
The worst of the heatwave in Catalonia will be felt in the Ponent and Terres de l’Ebre regions, where temperatures are expected to exceed 40 degrees during the hottest parts of the day.
For this reason, Meteocat is maintaining yellow and orange alerts throughout the region and warns of the possibility of isolated showers and thunderstorms throughout the week. The Rural Police and Civil Protection agencies also remain on alert; they have activated the protocol for extreme fire danger in 72 municipalities and have restricted access to 8 natural areas throughout Catalonia.
