At the beginning of September we received the news that Monica del Raval, an iconic ex-prostitute from Barcelona, had passed away. But Monica was more than that, she was, during her life, an example of struggle and courage.
She made her profession a central part of her public identity and, together with her makeup and the crown she always wore on her head, she became a pop icon of Barcelona.
Today, a little more than a month after her death, her body rests in a charity niche, some spaces in the cemetery that are subsidized and from where the remains usually end up in a common grave.
To avoid her oblivion, a citizen initiative has started a crowdfunding campaign to give Monica del Raval the space she deserves: a permanent niche with a tombstone with her image, as well as inscriptions that reflect her essence.
The promoter of this tribute states that he does not want “her spirit to wander among those who are no longer remembered”. That is why, once the campaign is over, he also wants to celebrate a farewell tribute to this iconic figure of a Raval that is increasingly disappearing due to mass tourism and gentrification.
Here you will find all the information about the crowdfunding campaign to give him a dignified burial.
