That Catalonia is one of the world’s great producers of cava is demonstrated by the fact that the very word “cava” only exists in Catalonia, and it is a unique way we have here to call sparkling wines.
In the last two years, Catalan cavas have made it onto the list of The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships, one of the most prestigious sparkling wine competitions in the world, which blind tests more than 1,000 sparkling wines in several stages before issuing its verdict.
In 2022, Freixenet’s Cordón Negro Brut Magnum cava took the top award for the best cava in the world for the second consecutive year, winning the National and Regional Champion awards, and in 2023 two other Catalan cavas were crowned in different categories of the competition.
The two Catalan cavas that were crowned in the most relevant awards of this important competition in 2023 share a common characteristic: they are made following organic and biodynamic cultivation and production techniques.
In first place appears the Nu Brut Reserva Organic 2020 from Cellers Maset, which has won the World Champion Organic Sparkling Wine 2023 award for the best cava and best organic sparkling wine in the world. This sparkling wine also appears in the Regional Trophy Champion as the best cava in Spain in 2023, and crowns several lists of the best cavas in the country.
On the other hand, the Gramona 2017 Imperial Magnum has won the World Champion Biodynamic Sparkling Wine 2023 award, the best biodynamic wine. In addition, it appears alongside Maset’s Nu Brut in the Regional Trophy Champion awards as the best Corpinnat of 2023, and in the National Trophy Champions as the best cava in Spain in 2023, among other mentions.
Finally, this year’s verdict on which will be the best cava of 2025 is already known, and of course, one category has also been won by a Catalan cava.
