The social housing apartments have become the lifeline for many Barcelonians who no longer know what to do to access decent housing. The excitement about the Glòries apartments proves it and that’s why we calculate that the announcement of almost 500 new social housing units in Sant Andreu will also raise interest.
This is what has been announced by the Barcelona City Council, which has announced an investment of almost 87 million euros to promote the construction of more than a thousand new public housing units in the Sant Andreu district before the end of the current term of office , half of which, almost 500, will be on the site of former Civil Guard barracks.
Where the 500-flat development in Sant Andreu will be located
Half of this development will be concentrated in a specific area: the land of the former Casernes, an area of strategic reconversion between the streets Fernando Pessoa, Passeig de Torras i Bages and Carrer Gran de Sant Andreu.
Of the 12 planned developments, 484 apartments will be located in this area that once housed military installations and is now undergoing an urban metamorphosis with housing, green areas and facilities. In some blocks, the first properties have already been awarded to their tenants, and other developments are under construction or about to be completed.
The road to this great transformation has been a long one. The Ministry of Defense ceded the land in 1997 to the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona, which in 2024 transferred the surface rights to the City Council, giving the way clear for the definitive development of the area.
Today, only two buildings of historical value remain from the old barracks. The rest of the space has given way to public facilities such as the Mossos d’Esquadra police station, the CUAP Casernes, the Eulàlia Bota school, an urban garden and several parks.
Social housing and facilities
The consistory’s commitment is not only residential. The area will be provided with new services to also serve the neighboring neighborhoods of La Trinitat Vella, Baró de Viver and El Bon Pastor. Among the planned actions are the completion of the Espai Jove Jaume Oller, the installation of an air conditioning system for the Eulàlia Bota school and the construction of a new bressol school.
Fernando Pessoa street will also be redeveloped, where a bike lane and a green area will be added, in addition to improving the cycling connection with the Santa Coloma promenade.
