Like what a coffee once cost, what it costs to unblock a supermarket trolley or …. we can’t think of any more examples. A euro is a price from another era and that is probably why a bakery in Barcelona that sells its portions of cheesecake at 99 cents has become so viral and popular, creating, as it could not be otherwise, endless queues at its door of people carrying a simple euro coin in their hands.
We are talking about 99Cheesecake, a phenomenon that in less than a year has opened two stores in Barcelona (Aribau, 42 and Gran de Gràcia, 194) and will now open one in Madrid.
Cakes for less than 1 euro
The idea of the founder, Roger Bettosini, was to emulate the $1 pizza slice stores in New York. This, applied to cheesecake and added to a strategy in networks that has allowed it to go viral, has made his formula a success.
The idea is easy:you can choose between the standard version (0,99€) and the premium version (2,99€), which can be Lotus, White Chocolate, 4 Cheese and Cookies&Cream or the premium of the month. Then, you can add toppings (0.80 cents each) and, from here, go out to take your photo and post it.
With this, 99 cheesecake sells about 1,500 pieces of cake a day, 2,500 on weekends, proving that the economy of scale that allows you to buy quality at these prices can be maintained.
Now, Bettosini, only 22 years old, is opening a new location in Madrid and promises a third in Barcelona, giving a new twist to a world, that of cheesecake, that seems to have no end.
