Let’s be honest, renting in Barcelona as a young person is a risky business for your wallet. With prices continuing to rise and salaries that sometimes seem stuck in another decade, any help is welcome. So, if you’re under 35 and can’t make ends meet at the end of the month, mark Monday, March 9, in red on your calendar. That day, at 9:00 a.m., the application period for Bo Lloguer Jove 2026 opens.
This aid, which is channeled by the Catalan government through state funds, offers €250 per month for a maximum of two years. In total, a “lifeline” of up to €6,000 that can make the difference between sharing a flat with three strangers or starting to breathe a little easier.
However, it is important not to rest on one’s laurels: the €29 million allocated to Catalonia will be distributed in order of application. In a context where demand often far exceeds supply, the first few minutes of the application period will be crucial.
Who can apply and how much should the apartment cost?
Not everyone is eligible for the subsidy. To qualify for the €250, the requirements are clear: you must be between 18 and 35 years old (inclusive) at the time of application, be a legal resident of Catalonia and, most importantly, have an annual income of less than €25,200 gross (referring to the 2025 fiscal year). In addition, the rental contract must be for your primary residence and all payments must be up to date.
The real estate market in Barcelona is a world apart, and the regulations reflect this. Therefore, the maximum rent to be eligible for the subsidy varies depending on the area. In the city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area, the rent cannot exceed €900 per month if you rent the entire apartment, or €450 if you rent a room. In the rest of the province of Barcelona, the limit drops to €650 for apartments and €350 for rooms.
A digital process and fierce competition
Applications should preferably be made online via the Generalitat’s Tràmits website. The Regional Minister for Territory, Sílvia Paneque, has insisted that registration must be done quickly, as the allocation system rewards those who apply first. The deadline is short: it starts on March 9 and closes on Friday, March 13, at 2:00 p. m., or earlier if the budget runs out.
It is important to remember that this subsidy is, as a general rule, incompatible with other rental assistance for the same purpose, although it can be supplemented with social benefits such as the Minimum Living Income. In addition, for the application to be successful, rent payments must be duly justified by bank transfer, direct debit, or even Bizum, provided that the name of the tenant, the name of the landlord, and the corresponding month are clearly stated.
