The taco… Perhaps the second best wrapping of things in the world (after the sandwich, the hamburger… fit your favorite here). We are glad that the taco is already an institution in Spain and that there are already contests that tell us which are the best in the country.
That is what the II Taco Championship of Spain has done, which has just announced the winners of its tournament, in which nearly 50,000 tacos participated and more than 15,000 votes were cast to choose the best tacos in Spain.
The three best tacos in Catalonia
Although there is no Catalan taco on the main podium, the championship and the votes have highlighted the three best Catalan tacos in the country.
And first place goes to Taco de Mixiote de Cordero from Amaranto Tarragona (Carrer de Fortuny, 5, Tarragona) with marinated leg of lamb that is steamed, wrapped in a leaf of the skin that comes off the stalk of the maguey pulquero. This skin, of pre-Hispanic origin, is called mixiote, hence the name of the dish.
In second place is the Carrillera “Kill Bill”, fromSan Taco Cantina Mexicana (Calle Esglesia, 8, Santa Coloma de Cervelló), a “remake” of the chochinita pibil, using Iberian carrillera meat cooked at low temperature with a somewhat spicy habanero pibil and served in blue corn tortilla originally from the sierra de chihuahua and topped with pickled onion, elote and chipotle mayonnaise.
In third place is the Kamaron Karateka Taco from Chamako (Calle Margarit, 18) Barcelona (Catalonia)) with battered shrimp with a crispy totopos topped with a creamy kimchi mayonnaise. All accompanied by colorful Thai vegetables marinated in their miracle sauce, with just the right touch of spice.
The winners of the national competition were the Birria de Rabo de Toro taco (Valletako (Madrid), Taco de Birria de Cordero (Los Chamacos (Castellón) and the Taco-Gras (Nolagras (Zaragoza).
