Although it may seem impossible, there are still cultural places in the city where locals and local tourism abound. The best example of this is the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), where almost half of its visitors are from the city and only 16% are foreign tourists.
Recently, a study by the Gabinete de Estudios Sociales y Opinión Pública (GESOP) for the Barcelona City Council on the city’s museums was published.
The study analyzes the data collected from 19 cultural institutions about their visitors: how they are, where they come from, if they go alone or accompanied, age and gender.
The case of the CCCB is the most surprising, since it is a museum in the heart of the city center, where most of its visitors are from the country itself. Specifically, 47.2% are from Barcelona, 25.4% from Catalonia and 9.1% from the rest of Spain.
If we compare it with other institutions in the city center, the result obtained is unique and singular, since, for example, the MACBA, which is located a few meters from the CCCB, only 9.1% of its visits are from residents of Barcelona.
The museums least visited by the people of Barcelona
Thanks to this GESOP study, we have also been able to find out which museums are least visited by the city’s residents.
Of all the visitors to the Museu d’Història de Catalunya (MHC), which is located very close to La Barceloneta, only 6.4% live in Barcelona, making it the museum least visited by locals. Almost 45% of its visits come from European tourists and 31.4% from other countries.
On the other hand, the Picasso Museum is second on this list, with only 7.2% of visits from locals. Most of the tourists it receives are from Europe, although, as in the case of the MHC, about 30% are from the rest of the world.
