Torre Baró has become the protagonist. One of the most forgotten neighborhoods of the city has jumped onto the stage thanks to the film “El 47”, the most watched Catalan film in history, which has transformed its story of struggle into a reference for many locals who now visit the neighborhood with curiosity.
Now, the struggle of “El 47” continues to take shape, and will become the Christmas lights of the neighborhood that, obviously, have been chosen by the neighbors. Thus, this Christmas 2024 the streets of the neighborhood will be decorated with 13 light panels inspired by “El 47” and designed and elaborated by the residents themselves.
What are the Christmas lights of “El 47” like?
Each panel represents a key moment in the film, which in turn reflects the neighborhood’s struggle and history. From Chicho Sánchez Ferlosio’s fight song, symbolized by the roosters confronting fascism and communism, to a representation of the real Manolo and Carmen, two figures that personify the union and dignity of Torre Baró. Even the famous bus hijacking, an episode that marked the collective memory of the neighborhood, has its place among the lights.
Far from the glamorous lighting of Passeig de Gràcia, the residents of Torre Baró have worked in a self-managed way to design and build the lights. From drawing on paper to assembling with wires and LED lights, each piece is the result of community effort. The project is supported by the Neighborhood Plan and Caritas Open Center, but the real strength behind these lights is the self-managed spirit and determination of the residents.
Torre Baró will turn on its lights on Friday, November 29 between Llicà and Castellvi streets.
