The Christmas lights switch-on 2024 in Barcelona will be again in Passeig de Gracia. Last year it was already held in the emblematic promenade coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the same, and this year the mayor Jaume Collboni has already announced that it will be the same again.
We tell you everything you need to know about the lighting ceremony in Passeig de Gràcia so you don’t miss anything.
When and where will the 2024 Christmas lights be switched on in Barcelona?
The Christmas lights switch-on ceremony will be on November 28 at Passeig de Gràcia (between Ronda Sant Pere and Gran Via) at 18h.
The show is free and without capacity limit. However, the city council warns that the show includes pyrotechnics and laser effects, so it is not recommended for people with photosensitivity.
A show with 5 stages and 28 performers
The light switch-on show this Christmas 2024 is called “Solvern”. As they explain, the show,“Solvern, with urban dance, rap and audiovisual effects as main elements, is presented as a large-format show featuring 28 performers on stage and five different stages along Passeig de Gràcia”.
The choreographies will be broadcast on screens installed on each stage, complemented by 3D animations, light effects, smoke effects and pyrotechnics, creating an immersive and multidimensional visual experience.
Solvern is a unique performing arts production created especially for this occasion, in collaboration with the renowned international company Aktionstheater PAN.OPTIKUM (Freiburg) and the Barcelona-based urban dance company Iron Skulls. This artistic proposal brings together several generations of performers and is inspired by the light that emerges in moments of darkness, such as the winter sun or the Christmas star. It is a hymn to hope, to the strength of cohesion and to the idea of new beginnings.
Barcelona Christmar Tour, the tourist bus of lights
As in previous years, the Christmas lights switch-on on Paseo de Gracia will also be the inauguration of the Barcelona Christmas Tour. The tourist bus that travels around the city to give a different perspective of the Christmas lights will begin to circulate just one day later, on November 29, in a magical walk through the streets during the holidays. Barcelona, capital of lights
As Jordi Valls, deputy mayor for Economy and Eixample councilor , explained last year, the goal is to turn the Christmas lighting into a new icon of the city.
That is why, since Collboni took office, the lighting of the lights has been turned into an iconic event, concentrating it in Pg. de Gràcia, contrary to the decentralization promoted by the previous government.
Since the beginning of Ada Colau’s government, the act was held in commercial hubs in other neighborhoods. After the 2017 attacks the event was held on La Rambla. La Rambla Guipúscoa (2018). Can Fabra (2019), el Born ( 2020) and plaza Catalunya (2021). In 2022 the activity took place in Plaça Major in Nou Barris, in 2022 it returned to Passeig de Gràcia and this year it repeats.
