A cinema that is closing… and a museum that is opening. The former Cine Comedia, an icon of Barcelona’s cultural life for six decades, will be the new home of the Thyssen Museum in Barcelona. This has been announced by La Vanguardia, putting an end to the uncertainty surrounding the future of this emblematic space since its closure on January 14.
For this to happen, the building at number 13 Paseo de Gracia, has been acquired by the investment platform Stoneweg. As explained to La Vanguardia by the original owners, the Pla and Planàs families, the choice of the Thyssen Museum as the new tenant responds to the commitment to maintain an activity of “added value” and with a long-term projection, aligned with the cultural spirit that has historically had the space.
This new Thyssen Museum in Barcelona will join the existing venues in Madrid and Malaga. Although no details have yet been revealed about the works to adapt the space or the opening date, the project promises to revitalize the historic building and become a new cultural meeting point in the center.
For his part, the mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, has described the arrival of the Thyssen as “great news for the city”, underlining the positive impact it will have on Barcelona’s museum offer. This announcement is in addition to other cultural projects underway, such as the extensions planned for the MACBA and the MNAC.
