Minister Óscar Puente had already warned about it a few days ago and now the news has been confirmed. As of January 1, 2025, municipal transport subsidies and free travel passes on Rodalies and Media Distancia will come to an end.
This measure puts an end to aids that allowed to enjoy discounts of up to 60% on municipal transport and free passes for medium distance and Rodalies trains. These subsidies were implemented in 2022 in response to the energy crisis and inflation resulting from the war in Ukraine. Since then, they have been extended on several occasions, with 2024 being the last year of their generalized application, with very good reception.
However, the Minister has announced that free electricity will be maintained, but only for the most vulnerable groups.
Which groups will have discounts on transport?
“The gratuity is not going to be replaced by the helplessness of the users”, declared Puente in the Congress of Deputies. In the absence of concrete discount measures for vulnerable groups, it is expected that these will affect young people and frequent users . In addition, it is expected to be free of charge for vulnerable groups, such as families with fewer resources.
For its part, the Spanish Committee of Persons with Disabilities (CERMI) has already asked Transportes to include persons with officially recognized disabilities among the population groups benefiting from reduced transport fares.
What is the price of metro and Rodalies passes without the subsidies?
In the absence of the aid and the groups that will receive it, these would be the approximate prices of the passes without discount.
T-Usual (monthly pass)
– Current price with 50% discount: 21,35€.
– Price without discounts: 42,70€.
T-Jove (quarterly youth season ticket)
– Current price with 50% discount: 42,70€.
– Price without discounts: 85,40€.
T-Casual (10 trips)
– Current price: 12,15€ (no discount applied)
Single ticket
– Current price: 2,55€ (no discount applied)
This is in addition to other recent developments in the fares of transport passes, which force users to be attentive to changes.
