Changes in Barcelona’s public transport system for 2026. After the implementation of the T-mobilitat, it is now the turn of one of the most used social tickets: the T-4. This cardboard ticket with magnetic strip has its days numbered, and before December 31, 2025 its regular users will have to migrate to the new T-metropolitana system.
If you are a user of this ticket or if you manage the transport of an elderly relative, it is crucial that you note the following dates in the calendar distributed by Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) to avoid setbacks.
When the T-4 expires and how to renew it
AMB has established two distinct phases for this transition, one the end of sale date and the other the validity date.
- End of sale (October 28): As of this date, it will no longer be possible to buy the cardboard T-4 at metro vending machines, tobacconists or kiosks.
- End of validity (December 31, 2025): If you have accumulated cardboard cards or bought several before October 28, you will be able to continue using them normally until the last day of 2025. As of January 1, 2026, they will cease to function.
The T-metropolitan arrives: How does the new system work?

The aim of this change is to integrate the T-4 bonus within a more durable and secure support. The cardboard is replaced by a rigid plastic card with contactless technology (contactless), very similar to the current T-mobilitat, but specific for the bonus profiles.
This new support is called T-metropolitana Tarjeta rosa reducida. To avoid queues and last-minute problems, AMB recommends changing the card holder as soon as possible.
The agency has enabled two main ways to apply for the new T-metropolitana (either in its free or reduced mode, depending on income):
- Via telephone: by calling the toll-free customer service and information line: 900 700 077.
- Online: Through the AMB’s official website, starting the Pink Card process.
Once the user receives his new red plastic card at home, the operation will be simple: he will be able to go to the machines of the metro network and, bringing his card close to the reader, he will be able to load and recharge the old T-4 tickets as many times as he needs.
