2023 was a good year for the moviegoers. It was one of those years that left more than one audiovisual jewel that everyone refers to as “the best film of the year”. When this happens joy and overwhelm come in equal parts, as the to-do list keeps growing and the time to watch them is still quite limited.
The Filmoteca de Catalunya already thought of this 20 years ago, when it premiered its first cycle with the programming of the best films of the year. This May kicks off a new edition of the cycle “Els millors films de l’any 2023” with the screening of the best rated films of the past year by critics and programmers of the Filmoteca. In addition, there will be an unreleased section with films that have so far only been broadcast on platforms or festivals.
The cycle will begin on Saturday, May 11 and will run throughout May and June. The screenings will take place at the Filmoteca and general tickets will be priced at €4, while reduced tickets will cost €3 (with library card, for seniors over 65 or people under 30). Some of them are already available on the web.
From Creatura to Steven Spielberg
In this edition, the audiovisual offer will leave us with a very varied panorama, from established film figures such as Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) or Víctor Erice (Close Your Eyes) to new faces that are off to a strong start, such as Justin Triet (Anatomy of a Fall) or Elena Martín Gimeno (Creatura).
Starting in June, the Inèdits section will be launched featuring four previously unreleased films that have not been screened in the following venues commercial displays.
These will be the film “The Tree of Golden Butterflies” by Vietnamese Pham Thien An, winner of the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the documentary “Notre corps” by Claire Simon, the comedy “Showing Up” by Lelly Reichardt and “Éclaireuses (Little School)”, a Belgian documentary by Lydie Wisshaupt-Claudel dedicated to the Petite École, a special education center that welcomes children who had never been to school, often in exile.
