If we have to define the traditional Christmas in Barcelona, the mind will go to two points. Firstly, the nativity scene in Plaça Sant Jaume, the focus of the eyes of all Barcelona’s women every Christmas, and secondly, the Fira de Santa Llúcia, the oldest Christmas crib market in the world.
And so, because it is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the city, this year, as every year since 1786, the Fira de Santa Llúcia returns to install their stops at the foot of the Cathedral so that residents can find all the necessary material to turn your home into a Christmas crib.
What can be found at the stands of the fira?
The almost 300 stands installed in the avinguda de la Catedral can be divided into three categories. On the one hand are those that sell the classic material to assemble a crib and Nativity figures such as moss, the caganer, the Kings of Orient, the shepherds or the Nativity Cave.
Then a hundred green stands, with fir trees and Christmas trees for the houses. Here you will also find the traditional Tió and other types of leaves, branches, lucky leaves and eucalyptus plants.
The Fira de Santa Llucia also has a craft area with stalls where there are clothes, toys or jewelry, to find the necessary gifts. Finally, there are also stalls selling typical Christmas instruments, such as zambombas or tambourines.

The Tió Gegant (Giant Tió): This figure, which celebrates its 33rd anniversary in 2025, is the delight of the little ones. It is installed so that children under 12 years of age can comply with the tradition of “making him shit” gifts, taking home a sweet and an explanatory booklet. El Tió will be active on key days at the end of November and during the weekends of December.
La Carassa de Navidad: This emblematic figure makes his way through the Gothic Quarter, spitting candy out of his mouth to the delight of the attendees. Its departures are scheduled for several days in December.
Diada de las Tradicions: On December 13, 2025, the 33rd Diada de las Tradicions y Costumbres Navideñas in Catalonia will be held. This popular celebration in the Plaça de la Catedral includes the solemn Ball d’Homenatge, the performance of the Esbart Català de Dansaires, bagpipe music with traditional Christmas carols, and the presentation of the Firaire de Honor 2025 award.
