A wine grown, harvested and produced in Barcelona. Can Calopa, the only vineyard within the margins of the city of Barcelona, has launched Vinyes de Barcelona blanc, the first white wine produced within Barcelona itself.
Its Vinyes de Barcelona blan is made with the variety, xarel-lo, which formerly grew in the Collserola area , and was born from a crowdfunding campaign, “Plantem un cep a Collserola” where 300 people contributed with solidarity contributions to plant organic vineyards, whose fruits have given rise to this first vintage.
The planting of the new vines responds to the vocation of l’Olivera-Can Calopa to produce native varieties linked to the environment, which are adapted to the conditions. According to Can Calopa, the harvest has been balanced and 885 bottles of this wine, which has aromas of pastries, white fruit, citrus and honey, have been produced. It is recommended to be paired with shellfish and vegetable dishes.
Can Calopa, the “half-urban” farmhouse
Can Calopa is a century-old farmhouse in Collserola where the only wines and oils born, literally, inside Barcelona are produced. Since 2010 the farm has been promoting peri-urban wine tourism, combining the wine tourism project in urban spaces with a social inclusion project that makes Can Calopa a unique place in Barcelona.
In addition to recovering a winemaking tradition in Barcelona, the Can Calopa project seeks to have a positive impact on the management of the territory. L’Olivera works to preserve the agricultural mosaic of Collserola and reduce the risk of fires by maintaining vineyards and crops in a territory where, while in 1950 agricultural activity represented 21.5% of the territory, today it only occupies 2%.
