When night falls and the heat subsides, the city’s ancient stone walls take on a special mystique—a calm that invites us to view our heritage with fresh eyes. In this summery spirit, the Monastery of Pedralbes is preparing to break its usual nighttime silence and open its doors at an unusual hour, inviting Barcelona residents to enjoy the cool evening air and discover the beauty of its imposing cloister in a whole new light.
The event will take place on July 24, 25, and 26, from 10:00 p.m. to midnight, as part of “Lumina Divina,” an interactive art installation with completely free admission. This nighttime spectacle aims to unite monumental architecture, the natural beauty of the gardens, and the water of the fountains into a single museum experience, revealing—through subtle interplay of light and sound—the hidden details and symbolism that usually go unnoticed during daytime visits.
A free stroll amid lights and mysteries
Upon entering the monastery gates, each visitor will receive a small light-up object and an informational brochure outlining the tour route. However, there will be no set path or mandatory order: the event is designed so that everyone can wander at their own pace, freely exploring the galleries and discovering every corner in their own time. The most observant attendees will also have the opportunity to search for clues scattered throughout the cloister that refer to recent archaeological discoveries in the tomb of Queen Elisenda, the historic patron of the site.
The show’s design is structured around a layered system that allows technology to be integrated organically, ensuring that the site’s original peaceful atmosphere remains undisturbed. On one hand, there will be a permanent backdrop consisting of soft lighting and a very subtle soundscape.
In addition, the so-called “stage lighting” will be activated, consisting of small, intermittent light displays at various points throughout the cloister. These bursts, lasting between 20 and 40 seconds, will project directional lights and sounds onto specific architectural elements to create a fully immersive experience. This represents an advanced use of technology that, in a different context, is related to modern initiatives implemented in the city, such as the immersive system in the multiconfessional chapel at the new Sant Andreu funeral home.
The climax: when the cloister comes to life
The most anticipated moment of the evening will arrive unexpectedly. Without warning, the entire cloister will come to life in unison, functioning visually as if it were a single living organism. The light will gradually sweep through the monastery’s three galleries, highlighting the monumental geometry of its medieval arches, columns, and capitals.
Nature and the plant life will also take center stage: the cypress trees and garden plants will be bathed in soft lighting that suggests an upward movement, as if the beams of light were rising directly toward the sky. At the same time, the central fountain and the Font de l’Àngel will reflect the installation’s sparkles, transforming the water into a true mirror of the starry sky.
