Technology continues to transform mobility in Barcelona, and if cardboard cards are becoming increasingly distant, now TMB has introduced a new payment method that moves them even further away and brings us closer to the digitization of the service: contactless payment.
Now, users can validate their single metro tickets with bank cards, cell phones or smart watches using contactless technology, thus eliminating the need to print physical tickets for single journeys.
This system, which is already fully implemented on the Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) bus fleet, has begun to be implemented as a pilot test at Barceloneta station, on line 4 of the metro, but is expected to be expanded to the entire network.
How is a ticket validated with a bank card or cell phone?
To validate the ticket, passengers only need to bring their bank card or mobile device to the terminal. In case a conductor requests it, users must show the last four digits of the card used for payment. This advance in the payment system seeks to improve the user experience and streamline the validation process on Barcelona’s public transport.
