Barcelona gains a new space in front of the sea. Since Friday, the city has Moll Barcelona Nord, an esplanade of more than 13,500 square meters located next to the World Trade Center that was, until now, closed to public use, and has finally opened to the people of Barcelona.
It is a maritime square equivalent to an island in the Eixample that offers a new perspective of the waterfront, just opposite the Maremàgnum.
Until now, the space had been, in the first place, a pier for cruise ships and ferries, whose activity has now been displaced to the Moll Adossat. Then it was occupied by the facilities of the New Zealand America’s Cup team. And now, finally, it has been vacated.
A provisional viewpoint that will be the venue for events
The space is still in a provisional phase -without street furniture or shade- but it is already passable and is intended as an open walkway overlooking the city. The definitive reform, which will integrate the Port Vell area urbanistically, is planned for next year.
The idea is that, once finished, this space can host regular activities in the port, such as the Setmana del Llibre en Català or Nadal al Port. In fact, at the inauguration of the space, the mayor of the city, Jaume Collboni, said he would like “the Rambla to end here”.
This weekend the space opened with an open day with activities, music and food.
