Sometimes, to escape the noise of the Diagonal, all you need to do is walk a few meters to the spot where the asphalt gives way to the scent of thousands of flowers. The Roserar de Cervantes is, without a doubt, one of those hidden gems that we Barcelonians keep under wraps, but which opens its doors wide every May to celebrate that spring has finally decided to settle in the city.
It’s not just any weekend. From May 8 to 10, 2026, this corner of the Pedralbes neighborhood will once again become the global epicenter of botany with the celebration of the 26th International New Rose Competition. It’s that time of year when the park looks its best, coinciding with the first bloom, and when the city dresses up in its finest to choose the most beautiful rose—one that doesn’t yet exist in flower shops because it’s an exclusive creation by the world’s top experts.
A heritage that stands the test of time
Barcelona has an idyllic relationship with roses that dates back a long way, specifically to the 1920s and 1930s, when the city was already a leader in the cultivation of this species. The contest, although revived in its current format in 2001, draws on that tradition, which seeks to reward not only aesthetics but also botanical innovation. For months, a committee of experts closely monitors the growth of these plants, evaluating their resistance to pests, their fragrance, and, of course, the novelty they bring to the floral world.
What makes this event special is that it’s not just the experts who have a say. While an international jury of seventy professionals decides which are the best technical varieties, residents and visitors have an equally important mission: to vote for the “Rosa Ciutadana 2026.” On Friday, May 8, starting at 5:00 p.m., the grounds will open their doors so that anyone can wander among the flower beds and take part in this popular vote.
Much more than just a beauty contest
The schedule for these three days goes far beyond simply viewing flowers. The City Council has designed a program intended for family enjoyment, ranging from floral art demonstrations and guided tours to uncover the park’s secrets, to concerts and culinary activities centered around the world of roses. It’s the perfect plan for those seeking a cultural outdoor alternative without leaving Barcelona.
It’s worth noting that the Roserar de Cervantes boasts more than 10,000 rose bushes representing some 2,000 different species, making it a living museum. If you’re planning to visit, the best option is public transportation (L3, Zona Universitària stop), as the area tends to fill with onlookers drawn by the visual spectacle. There’s no better way to welcome May than by letting yourself be carried away by the scent of a flower that, quite literally, no one has ever seen before.
You can check the full program of activities on the event’s website.
