With the new government already in full swing , the plenary of Barcelona is now negotiating the budgets of the mandate, and each party is taking advantage of the moment to negotiate their approval in exchange for city proposals.
In this dispute, Barcelona en Comú, now that it is in opposition, has presented a proposal to significantly expand the city’s green and pedestrian zones, proposing the creation of four new “green mega-axes” similar to Consell de Cent that would significantly transform the urban landscape of the Catalan capital.
It should be made clear that this proposal is just that, a proposal, which is pending negotiation and subject to the final approval of the budget. In the face of these new green axes, the PSC is rather betting on “greening” the city by gaining green spaces in abandoned or undeveloped plots, or on esplanades, island interiors or urban squares.
What are the nine proposed “green axes”?
The proposal of the commons includes the creation of three new green axes and the extension of an existing one.
Sants and Creu Coberta
It would become a green axis from the Ramblas de Badal and Brasil to Plaza España, covering 1.51 kilometers. This section, which is already closed to traffic on weekends as part of the “Obrim Carrers” program, would follow the model implemented in Pi i Margall street.
Sicily Street
The pacification would extend from Travessera de Gràcia to Ausiàs Marc, connecting with a small pedestrian section already existing in the block that connects to the Estación del Norte. This axis would have a length of 1.73 kilometers.
Paseo Maragall
This would be the most extensive project, covering the entire length of the promenade, from Carrer Tajo to Carrer Còrcega and Carrer Fresser, with a length of 2.76 kilometers, twice as long as the others. It would also follow the model of Pi i Margall.
Extension of Consell de Cent
It is proposed to extend the existing green axis from Passeig de Sant Joan to Avenida Meridiana, adding 1.61 kilometers to the current stretch. This would result in a green mega-axis of 4.42 kilometers in total.
