Cigarette butts are the most abundant residue in the beaches of the Mediterráneo. This weekend, anyone will be able to do their bit to collect some sand at the la Barceloneta beach. The organizations Surfrider Barcelona, No More Cigarette Butts on the Ground and WWF Barcelona have scheduled a joint campaign to collect cigarette butts for this Saturday, June 1.
La Estrella Herida, on the Barceloneta promenade, will be the meeting point starting at 9:45 am. Fifteen minutes later, at 10:00, there will be an informative talk about the importance of the campaign, detailing the negative impact of cigarette butts on the environment. During this session, the necessary collection materials, such as gloves and bags, will be distributed.
The big collection is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., when hundreds of volunteers will walk every inch of this centrally located beach. The cigarette butts collected will be placed in bottles, and it is estimated that up to 360 cigarette butts can be collected per 1 liter bottle.
At 11:30 a.m., participants will meet again to count the total number of cigarette butts collected. Data will be recorded and a photo will be taken with the total number of cigarette butts collected before concluding the activity at 12:30 pm.
The registration in this activity is now available on the Surfrider Spain website.
