L’Ajuntament de Barcelona will install 5,000m2 of shaded areas in Portal de l’Àngel, Plaça Comercial (both in Ciutat Vella) and Paseo Marítimo (in Sant Martí). It will do so through an ideas competition it has called, with a total budget of 2.15 million euros, and the facilities are expected to be completed during the summer of 2027.
This initiative is part of the municipal Climate Plan, the consistory’s roadmap to adapt the city to climate change and protect the health of citizens, especially those most vulnerable to heat, during the summer months. The project aims to have more than 215 shaded spaces throughout the city by 2027.
The 3 iconic squares to be funded by this project will distribute the square meters of shade as follows: Portal de l’Àngel, 2,000 m²; Paseo Marítimo (between Port Olímpic and Mar Bella):¡, 1,600 m²; and Plaça Comercial, 1,400 m².
These spaces have been chosen “for their representativeness, heritage or landscape value”, so the ideas presented should not be the same as those applied in other areas of the city. The aim is to seek uniqueness in each of the facilities, high architectural quality, integration into the landscape and a sustainable proposal, easy to assemble and dismantle.
In the specific case of Portal de l’Àngel, the City Council is also considering adding a line of trees, linked to the second phase of the road’s repaving, to complement the generation of shade.
More shaded areas in 2026
In parallel to the competition for singular spaces, the Barcelona City Council has awarded this October the installation of standardized shading in 13 public spaces, some of which include playgrounds.
These installations, which total a surface area of 4,925 m² and have a budget of 1,387,573 euros, are scheduled to come into service during the summer of 2026.
The awarded sites are:
- Plaça del Poeta Boscà (Ciutat Vella).
- Plaça André Malraux (Eixample)
- Jardins Duran i Reynalds (H. Clínic) (Eixample)
- Carrer del Foc (Skatepark) (Sants-Montjuïc)
- Plaça Lesseps (Sarrià-Sant Gervasi)
- Plaça Joanic (Gràcia)
- Plaça de la Sedeta (Gràcia)
- Ronda Guinardó (H. Sant Pau) (Horta-Guinardó)
- Parc de l’Aqüeducte (Nou Barris)
- Plaça d’Àngel Pestaña (Nou Barris)
- Plaça del Canòdrom (Sant Andreu)
- Plaça 25N (Metro La Pau) (Sant Martí)
- A space in Les Corts (to be determined)
The City Council also plans to put out to tender this month the framework agreements for the supply of more standardized systems and for the planting of trees at another 10 priority sites (an additional 5,500 m²).
This action is part of the municipal Shade Program, a strategy endowed with an overall budget of 15 million euros that plans to create more than 52,000 m² of new shaded area throughout the city.
The aim is to reduce the temperature and improve the well-being of citizens where it is not possible to plant vegetation and trees, which continues to be the priority option of the consistory for its socio-environmental benefits, whether in children’s areas, rest areas, squares or municipal parks.
