The Catalan government and the Association of Municipalities for Mobility and Urban Transport (AMTU) will launch the T-Social card in the last quarter of 2026. This new digital support will group together municipal discounts for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, unemployed, or disabled, on a single physical card, similar to the T-Metropolitana.
According to a press release from the Catalan government, the system will be fully implemented during the first quarter of 2027 and will be integrated with T-Mobilitat.
The T-Social will replace the old magnetic stripe cards and will unify the management of the subsidies that each municipality currently offers separately.
The cost of the physical card has not yet been revealed. Each local council will retain its power to decide which citizens are entitled to discounts and what final price they will pay for their journeys, based on their social policies.
The distribution of the cards will begin gradually before the end of 2026. The 21 municipalities that make up this first phase of deployment are Cabrera de Mar, Calldetenes, Canovelles, Les Franqueses del Vallès, Granollers, Igualada, Martorell, Mollet del Vallès, La Roca del Vallès, Rubí, Sabadell, Sant Quirze del Vallès, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, Santa Margarida de Montbui, Sitges, Terrassa, Vallirana, Vic, Vilafranca del Penedès, Vilanova del Camí, and Vilanova i la Geltrú.
Differences with the T-Metropolitana
The new T-Social is the general model that the Catalan government offers to Catalan municipalities to integrate their subsidies into the T-mobilitat. This card is different from the pink T-Metropolitana card, which works exclusively in the 36 municipalities of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB).
While the AMB manages the T-Metropolitana, the T-Social channels the social ordinances of the other participating localities.
The digitization of the system will allow local councils to obtain real data on transport use. This information will be used to improve bus frequency and urban routes.
In addition, the new format will facilitate administrative procedures such as renewing tickets or recovering balances in the event of card loss.
