There must be few Barcelonians who do not have at least one memory associated with the sandwiches of Can Conesa, the most legendary sandwich shop in Barcelona. Its corner shop in Plaça Sant Jaume has served its ironed sandwiches to generations of people on their strolls through the center, whether to go shopping or to visit the crib in the square.
Now its owner Josep, son of the creator of Can Conesa, the first frankfurt of Barcelona, retires and puts an end to decades of work in front of the most mythical sandwiches of the city. That is the bad news. The good news is that the local has already closed the transfer and everything will remain the same.
Who will stay with Can Conesa
Everything stays at home, and Can Conesa will be taken over by two of its managers Joan and Cristian, who started talking about the transfer with Josep on the basis of a premise that united them both: “to keep everything as it is”.
And so it will be, Joan and Cristian (who have been working in the company for 34 and 18 years, respectively), will take over Can Conesa from next Monday with everything, from the name of the restaurant to the work team, including the menu or the suppliers, exactly the same.
In fact, the intention was not to give hype to the change as it will hardly be noticed (Josep has been managing the restaurant for some time now with a view to retirement), but when it comes to such a mythical restaurant, it is difficult for a transfer not to become news.
Thus, Can Conesa will continue as it has since 1951: serving the original frankfurt, the best-selling sandwich, but also all its other dozens of options, and filling the hands of Barcelonians with sandwiches that warm the soul and write the history of the city.
