There are restaurants for celiacs in Barcelona where the food is of such quality that there are more people with gluten tolerance than without.
If you are convinced that you could be a millionaire if you put a euro in a piggy bank every time someone makes the joke (“I can’t eat that because I’m celiac”, “well, I’m Antoniaco”), this article is of interest to you.
And it interests you because with it we intend to combat two prejudices. One, that celiacs don’t live by Mercadona alone. Two, that it is not true that gluten-free food is or tastes worse. And with the latter, we also aim to make that friend who says “no way” think twice.
Besides the fact that the existence of the article makes sense insofar as (as we commented in this article) Barcelona aspires to become a city gluten-free and we want to collaborate in this reduction of wheat consumption.
If last week we talked about vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona, today is the turn of restaurants for celiacs. So that you don’t suffer – literally, so that you don’t suffer – here’s the list.
1. M Viader Farm
It is not that the decoration evokes exactly a farm, you will not find cows or chickens, nor does it smell of feces or reminiscent of the countryside. Maybe that’s why it’s the perfect place to snack. Its specialties are hot chocolate and croissants for those with a sweet tooth and cold meats for the more “salty”.
Where: Carrer Xuclà, 4-6
2. En Ville Restaurant
It is considered one of the most beautiful restaurants in Barcelona and the truth is that if you want to impress a date, it is the right place (and you don’t have to save a lot to pay the bill): the atmosphere is reminiscent of the Parisian “bistros”. The chocolate dessert with passion fruit is a must.
Where: Carrer del Dr. Dou, 14
3. Meraviglioso
Probably the great drama of those who test positive for celiac disease is to say goodbye to pasta (pasta, at least, as they had conceived it until then). Well, Meraviglioso is the perfect methadone for that withdrawal syndrome.
Where: Carrer de València, 28
4. Crepes Barcelona
If pasta is the first food that celiacs think of when they know they have celiac disease, pancakes could be – depending on their sweet tooth – the second. With a Breton atmosphere, in Creps Barcelona make the dough by hand with organic whole wheat flour, so their products have one of the healthiest and most natural flavors in the city. It is the right place for those who want to skip operation bikini without feeling too guilty.
Where: Carrer Enric Granados, 38
5. Messié gluten free
The price of all the pizzas is around 10 euros and to that we have to add -or we have to put up front- that they are delicious. In this place at Gràcia you can find the entire menu gluten free and the food is up to par. Ah! And the beers. So many beers to choose from!
Where: Carrer del Torrent de l’Olla, 65
6. Il piccolo focone
There is a pizza from eight cheeses. Eight cheeses! And this is as far as the review goes: eight cheeses on a single plate is a strong enough argument to go. Like the Messié Gluten Free, its entire menu is suitable for celiacs.
Where: Carrer del Dos de Maig, 268
7. Nectari
In a way, cooking gluten-free is like adding a degree of difficulty to cooking. Like a permanent Masterchef test. From Masterchef -better than, really- are Nectari’s dishes. Nectari and its chef Jordi Esteve have a Michelin star. The menu is Mediterranean cuisine seen from an Asian perspective. 95% of the dishes are gluten-free.
Where: València Street, 28.
8. Conesa
When one begins to count the things that can not be consumed by celiacs, the first thing that comes to mind (we said) is pasta. Then comes the beer. Then, the pastries. And at some point -perhaps previously-, bread. Bread. That is why we value – nay, revere – Conesa. Conesa is an institution when it comes to selling snacks. Hot and cold sandwiches made with corn, egg and own griddle to avoid contamination. Paradise.
Where: Carrer de la Llibreteria, 1.
