If there is a Christmas show par excellence, this is undoubtedly Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker. It is a spectacular ballet that explains a Christmas story, where Clara, the protagonist, is given a nutcracker that ends up becoming a prince.
This Christmas, the Barcelona Ballet has scheduled several shows in Catalonia of this great masterpiece with a peculiarity, has Catalanized it by introducing a scene with castellers. In our city, the ballet can be seen on January 18 and 19 at the Casino de l’Aliança del Poblenou.
The most Catalan moment comes when, after many twists and turns in the story, Clara arrives in the second act to the Kingdom of Sweets. Traditionally, there, the different countries and nations represented dance showing their most typical sweets. It is at this moment that the neules and the carquinyolis appear.
In the version of the Ballet of Barcelona, the carquinyolisare dancers who are part of an esbart and les neules are castellers, which in the performances of Barcelona are represented by the Castellers de Sarrià. During the performance, they make three pillars and a pom, thus bringing the Catalan culture to such an international work.
