The Barcelona Conciliar Seminary is not just a former center for religious education. Designed by Elies Rogent, Antoni Gaudí’s mentor, this late 19th-century Neo-Romanesque complex occupies an entire block in the Antiga Esquerra neighborhood of the Eixample and features cloisters and interior gardens. But perhaps the most surprising thing is what it houses inside: Barcelona’s oldest public library and a museum with around one million fossils.
In addition to its history and heritage, it offers a cultural program that includes Candlelight concerts at the Seminari Conciliar de Barcelona, where live performances take place by the light of thousands of candles.

What is the history of the Conciliar Seminary of Barcelona?
Built between 1879 and 1904, the Seminari Conciliar de Barcelona is one of the most notable works by Elies Rogent, who also designed the historic building of the University of Barcelona. Its medieval-inspired architecture combines Neo-Romanesque elements with cloisters, porticoed galleries, and a church whose dome is reminiscent of that of the Poblet Monastery.
But its walls have also witnessed some of the city’s most turbulent chapters. During the Tragic Week of 1909, the Seminary suffered a fire, and years later, during the Civil War, its facilities were used as a hospital and shelter for refugees.
Things to Do at the Seminari Conciliar
A museum with a million fossils inside a seminary? Yes, indeed—and admission is free. The Museu Geològic del Seminari is open on weekdays and allows visitors to explore its paleontological and mineral collections, either on their own or through guided tours. And for those who prefer books, there’s also the Episcopal Public Library, with more than 370,000 volumes and historical collections that can be consulted for study or research purposes.
Music also plays a prominent role at the Seminary thanks to the Candlelight concerts, which transform its Aula Magna with thousands of candles and tributes to great artists and composers. From movie soundtracks to pop and rock classics, these melodies are reinterpreted live by string quartets on a stage where the historic architecture is part of the experience.
