Everything is more beautiful in spring. The days are longer, the sun’s rays warmer and the flowers, which usually appear around this time, lovelier. We may need to stock up on antihistamines in April, May or June to survive, but otherwise everything is beautiful. And even more so in a city like Barcelona, to which these months are as good as the tanned skin of an office worker.
Flowers are perhaps the most visible change that Primavera brings to the city and its surroundings. And, so that you can discover them all in their full splendor, we have created the definitive Barcelona flower calendar: where and when to see flowers in the Catalan capital.
Almond and cherry
The sakura flower, as Rosalía sang in her song of the same name, is usually related to Japan, but it is not uncommon to find cherry blossoms near Barcelona. The best known place to see this floral spectacle is perhaps Sant Climent de Llobregat, just 14 km from the capital; but it is also worth visiting other places like the Aitona Valley, Segrià i Lleida or Arenys de Munt, Soses, where the cherry trees do their magic and display their white flowers across the length and breadth of their fields.
To see almond blossom in Barcelona, just go to Ribera d’Ebre, in the south of Catalonia. Around villages like Tivissa you will find beautiful scenery worthy of your cell phone wallpaper. Another ideal zone to enjoy these views is the region of Les Garrigues in Lleida, between Arbeca and La Floresta.
🗓️ Late March to early April
Tulip
Tulips are an infallible flower. If you want to give flowers to someone, stop by any flower shop and buy a bouquet. They are not as meaningful as roses, nor are they as tacky as a ready-made bouquet. They are perfect.
Seeing tulips in Barcelona is not complicated. Just stop by Tulipmania, a tulip field in Barcelona that offers guided tours, photography sessions and even astronomy workshops among these colorful flowers. A perfect spring plan to do with friends, couple or children.
🗓️ Late March through early June
Love Tree
How cool is it that in Barcelona there is a tree known as the Love Tree? A lot, right? It is a plant of Asian origin that receives this name because of the heart shape of its leaves.
In the city of Barcelona, it can be found in the crossroads of the Eixample but also in other emblematic places of the city, such as the Vil-la Amèlia Garden, Doctor Letamendi Square, Diagonal Mar Park, Joanic Square or the Palace of the Heures.
🗓️ According to Barcelona’s floral calendar, between March and June
Rapeseed
The rapeseed flower may not be as well known as the others on this list but, without a doubt, its bloom is a spectacle that is well worth a getaway. The most impressive rapeseed fields near Barcelona are those of Pla de l’Estany or those of in the Empordà region.
It is a very little touristic area but its locals consider it as the Catalan Tuscany. In it, rapeseed is planted to produce oil from this plant, widely used in cosmetics and its planting results in a yellow spectacle that does not disappoint.
🗓️ During the month of April
Sunflower
If you’re not fascinated by sunflowers, I don’t know what you’re waiting for to become obsessed with them. They move with the sun, their seeds are one of the best nuts and their roots can clean contaminated soils. In addition, and as if all this were not enough, they paint the landscapes in a beautiful shade of yellow, worthy of the Pantone catalog.
There are some sunflower fields near Barcelona, especially in the Empordà region between the Albera and Gavarras mountain ranges, one of the most beautiful areas of Girona. We can also find sunflower fields in Torrella de Fluvià or Jafre, also in Girona.
🗓️ Between June and July
Rose
To speak of roses is to speak of Sant Jordi and to talk about Sant Jordi is to talk about Barcelona. The city of Barcelona has areas dedicated to this wonderful flower where you can enjoy it practically all year round.
One of them is the Cervantes Park, a must-see garden in the city which has perhaps the most beautiful rose garden in Barcelona. It has 11,000 rose bushes of 245 different varieties of roses as well as sculptures, a pergola, a children’s play area and even a ping-pong table. A perfect and very floral plan.
🗓️ Depending on the type of rose: in Primavera, in Primavera and autumn or all year round
Poppy
It is common knowledge (I hope) that the poppy is a flower that grows everywhere. If you go by car, you will see them on every corner giving colorful notes to the provincial and regional roads. But, although seeing a couple of them loose on the road will bring a smile to anyone’s face, the real thing is to see them in the field. Although in Catalonia it is difficult to see large fields of these little red flowers, near Barcelona there are some poppy fields that are worth seeing.
You can see poppies in Barcelona in the Collserol Park but also in the surroundings of Hostalets de Balenyà and Parets del Vallés.
🗓️ From April to May and from September to October
Candlelight Spring
This spring you don’t need cars, free time or antihistamines to travel to fields and gardens to see flowers near Barcelona, just stop by one of the Candlelight concerts of the season. During the spring months, the candlelight concert series has created a series of concerts that have been Candlelight Spring tribute cycle by candlelight, now also surrounded by hundreds of flowers.
A magnificent spring plan where you can enjoy the colors of the season while listening to the songs of artists such as Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Hans Zimmer, Queen or ABBA.
🗓️ Throughout Primavera
