The new Barcelona public transportation card, the T-Mobilitat will bring changes starting in 2025 in the way of paying and the cost of travel: it will be charged per kilometer traveled.
Oriol Martori, General Director of Transport and Mobility of the Generalitat, announced during the Catalan Mobility Day, organized by the Associació de Municips per la Mobilitat i el Transport Urbà (AMTU), the main novelties of the T-Mobilitat, which are expected to be implemented from 2025, and among which is the elimination of tariffs by zones.
This change will introduce charging by kilometers traveled, which is expected to be ready before 2027. To this end, the fare integrationmust first be completed , which will be extended to the entire Catalan territory, covering the four Metropolitan Transport Authorities (ATM) of Barcelona, Lleida, Girona and Camp de Tarragona, and which will simplify travel by allowing the use of a single card throughout the territory.
This step is essential, as it will later allow better calculation of the distance traveled and lower the price of public transport, with savings of up to 80% for some user groups.
To carry out these modifications , new machines and data management systems will be installed for optimal real-time calculation of tariffs.
