The summer of 2026 will be remembered for many reasons, but one of the most special is the historic total solar eclipse that we will experience across much of the Iberian Peninsula for the first time in over 100 years.
Next Wednesday , August 12, the moon will completely cover the sun, and although it won’t be 100% visible in Barcelona, it will be possible to view the total eclipse in its entirety in 221 municipalities in the provinces of Lleida and Tarragona.
For anyone whose town isn’t within the full visibility zone but who wants to enjoy this unique phenomenon, we recommend planning your travel arrangements and using only certified protective eyewear (ISO 12312-2:2015). If you don’t have a pair yet, you can get one of the 150,000 pairs that the Government of Catalonia is distributing for free.
If you ultimately decide to watch it from home (with total or partial visibility), the National Geographic Institute has launched a viewer that lets you check whether it will be visible from your balcony or if any obstacles will block your view. And if you can’t find a good spot in Barcelona, remember that Montjuïc Castle will be open so you can watch the eclipse from its observation deck.
But if you’re ultimately looking for a spot with total visibility, keep in mind the massive influx of tourists from across Europe and possible road closures. It’s very likely that there will be major traffic jams and gridlock on the roads. Fortunately, it’s possible to reach many of the municipalities with the best visibility without having to drive.
That’s why we’re providing this guide, where you can find out which towns are included and how to get there by public transportation.
Towns and municipalities in Catalonia within the totality path of the eclipse (and how to get there)
Depending on the exact observation point, the solar eclipse will begin its partial phase between 7:33 p.m. and 7:36 p.m., and will reach totality around 8:29 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in most Catalan towns. It will be at that moment when the Moon completely covers the sun’s disk.
The duration of the peak phase will depend on location: 26 seconds in the northern areas closest to the edge of the visibility zone and up to a minute and a half in the central-southern region.
In the list below, we’ve ranked by duration the municipalities where the eclipse will be fully visible from the town center and which are accessible by direct public transportation from Barcelona. This doesn’t mean they’re the only places where it can be seen, but they are the ones where you can enjoy it without having to find a vantage point or travel several kilometers to a nearby viewpoint.

Keep in mind that the sun will be very low in the sky, and it won’t be visible from every location within these municipalities. Be sure to find a spot free of obstructions such as buildings, trees, or hills. The weather forecast (AEMET) indicates that the sky will be mostly clear, but don’t forget to check the weather report that morning.
If you’re looking for a tool to ensure you’ll have a good view of the eclipse from your chosen location, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has launched this eclipse viewer to check how it will appear at a specific location or set of coordinates.
