The neighborhood of Congrés i els Indians, in the district of Sant Andreu, already enjoys the new Plaça del Canòdrom. A reform that, after a year, has improved the space, turning it into a landscaped area in which new uses are promoted for the neighbors of the neighborhood and that responds to a long claim of the entities and neighborhood of the environment.
In total, the redevelopment has acted on a total of 8,425 m2, preserving its historic track with a three-meter wide circuit that keeps recovering the memory of the original building, the last canodrome in the city.
The new plaza offers different spaces and areas for different uses, such as an agora for open-air events, whose seating capacity is complemented by the equipment’s Stalls/Stands, and a 489 m2 area for dogs. Another highlight is the super children’s play area, measuring more than 863 m2, which offers different possibilities for children to play and explore.
Drought puts the brakes on the Verde Zone
As for the landscaped area, although due to the extreme drought the vegetation planting work could not be carried out within the construction period, it will occupy a space of 2,245 m2 where shaded areas will be guaranteed. The vegetation will have an important symbolic role, as it will be located around the new contour of the square and will allow rediscovering and remembering the cleared greyhound track formerly hidden behind the perimeter wall.
The name of the square is given by the building of the old Canòdrom, by Antoni Bonet and Josep Puig, from 1964, which is part of the Catalog of Historical-Artistic Architectural Heritage of the City, and has a special importance in the neighborhood. The Canòdrom building is one of the most unique works in Barcelona, and is part of a group of works of modern architecture that emerged after the war, since it is the only building with a unique metal structure in Barcelona that has survived those years.
The works on the square also include the redevelopment of Can Ros street, which will become a single, accessible platform to give continuity to the Canòdrom square. The works will start during the summer and will last 6 months.
