A Gran Bacchus de Oro award. The stately name gives an idea of the prestige of the award just won by the Cuvée 1887 Brut Nature Organic from Cavas Hill, a wine produced less than an hour from Barcelona that has become one of the best cavas in the world.
This Catalan cava, included in the Cava Denomination of Origin (DO) and produced in Alt Penedés, in the province of Barcelona, has won a Grand Gold Bacchus and has also received a nomination in the same competition for best sparkling wine.
The Cuvée 1887 Brut Nature Organic of Cavas Hill, which sells for 7.25€ on the website of the cellars, is made according to the traditional method of cava from the Penedès. Its vineyard grows in Moja, and produces an organic and medium-aged cava, that is, up to twelve months. According to its producers, the cava is straw-colored with greenish tones and a dry, balanced taste with a long and persistent finish.
In addition to Cavas Hill’s cava, two other creations from the Cava Designation of Origin have been distinguished in the competition: Codorniu Arns Collecta Blanc de Noirs Reserva 2019, from Codorniu SA, and the Malvasía 2014, from Freixenet.
Bacchus, International Competition of Wines, Vermouths and Wine Spirits is the only competition in Spain recognized by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) and is one of the most prestigious in its sector. This year, the contest celebrated its 22nd edition, to which a total of 1,700 varieties of beverages were submitted. The complete list of winners can be consulted on its website.
A country of cava
It is no secret that cava is one of Catalonia’s star products, and in recent years several of the country’s productions have been winning international awards. A couple of Christmases ago, The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships determined, for example, that Freixenet Cordon Negro is the best cava in the world for the second consecutive year.
That same year , the Peñín Guide placed a Catalan cava from Alella as the best in the country and last Christmas the same The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championships again selected two Catalan cavas, demonstrating the importance of this Catalan product.
The visit to this cava can be complemented, by the way, with a reservation at the Catalan restaurant that has won the Nobel Prize for Gastronomy, an example of sustainability and local produce that is also located in the Penedés region, and whose chef, a former war correspondent and owner of an NGO that works in war-torn countries, has a story that alone is worth the visit.
